Dredging at Tavira
Ramalho Rosa Cobetar has begun works to dredge sediment from the Cabanas, Santa Luzia and Quatro Águas channels, under a contract awarded by Polis Ria Formosa.
Located in the heart of Ria Formosa Nature Park, the works consist of dredging sediment from the Cabanas, Santa Luzia and Quatro Águas channels, and also at the low-tide delta at the entrance to the port of Tavira. The dredged material will subsequently be used for dune reinforcement on Tavira beach. The two main objectives of this contract are to strengthen the dunes and provide more sand for Tavira beach, to the east of the port entrance, and to restore the navigability of the neighbouring channels.
The dredging work is being done with a suction dredger, 34 m long and 8,5 m wide, with a capacity to transport up to 245 m3. A fixed pipe will be installed next to the beach to take up the sediment dredged. The scheduled dredging performance rate is nearly 2,000 m3 per day.
On the beach, mechanical means will be used to level the sand over an area 500 m long and 60 m wide. After levelling the sand according to the geometrical values fixed, dune regenerators will be erected, using eucalyptus posts.
